Under this arrangement the Infant Welfare doctors send particulars
of the patient with a clinical note of the case to the Hospital. An appointment
is then made for one of the honorary consultants on the staff of the
Hospital to examine the patient, a report is sent back to the Infant Welfare
doctor on the case, and, where necessary, treatment is given.
Midwifery Service.
Since 1938 the London County Council, under the Midwives Act,
1936, has been the authority for providing domiciliary services throughout
the whole of London. The voluntary bodies who were, until the coming
into force of the new Midwives Act, carrying out district midwifery in
Westminster under the City Council's scheme entered into agreements
with the London County Council for a similar purpose. The latter, in
permitting the City Council's midwifery scheme to operate as before,
has acted generously and most considerately, while retaining its rights
as the paramount authority under the statute. There has been, therefore,
no change or break in the continuity of these services. The figures
below indicate the work of the district midwives of Westminster
Hospital and of the Westminster Health Society acting for the London
County Council through the City Council's original scheme.
