Scarlet Fever.—One hundred and sixty-four cases of this disease
occurred in 1938, a decrease of 94 on the figures of 1937. No death
occurred. The case rate of this disease per 1,000 of the population was
1.3 for the City, and for England and Wales 2.41. The death-rate for
London was 0.01 per 1,000, and for England and Wales 0.01.
Diphtheria.—Two hundred and four cases of this disease occurred,
showing an increase of 71 on the figures of 1937. The case rate of
this disease for Westminster was 1.63 per 1,000 living, and for England
and Wales 1.58. One death occurred. The death-rate for England
and Wales was 0.07, for London 0.05, and for Westminster 0.008.
Report on Schick Testing and Immunisation Treatment against
Diphtheria, 1938.
Weekly clinics for this purpose were held throughout the year at each
of the Council's Maternity and Child Welfare Centres, and at the Westminster
Health Society's Centre.
During the year 223 new cases were dealt with, as compared with 254
and 245 in 1937 and 1936 respectively.

Treatment was continued on the lines indicated in previous reports,
using toxoid antitoxin mixture for immunisation. The preliminary
Schick test was only done on older children, or for some special reason in
particular cases. Treatment was carried out without difficulty and with
satisfactory results. The following table shows the age groups of those
treated and the results of such preliminary tests as were performed:—
