These figures show the amount of sulphur tri-oxide, in milligrammes
formed on a piece of fabric 100 square centimetres in area, per day,
due to the active sulphurous impurities in the atmosphere.
INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD.
The inspection of food and of premises where foodstuffs are stored
or sold receives constant attention. One thousand eight hundred and
twenty-three samples of various foods and drugs were purchased for
analysis, while 2,546 visits were paid to premises where food is sold,
stored, or otherwise handled, for the purpose of observing the condition
of food and premises, cleanliness, and methods of handling. Notices
numbering 131 were served in respect of various defects. All were
complied with, no legal proceedings being necessary.
Certification of food for export.—Ten certificates were issued in respect
of the export of articles of food to Switzerland.
Ice Cream, Preserved Meat, etc., Premises.
Under Section 187 of the Public Health (London) Act, 1936, it is
necessary for premises used for the manufacture, storage or sale of ice
cream, and those used for the manufacture of pressed, pickled, potted or
preserved meat, fish and other foods to be registered with the local
authority.
Ice Cream premises.
At the 31st December, 1938, there were 146 premises on the register
for the sale or storage of ice cream, of which 28 were also registered for
the manufacture of this commodity. Twenty-one premises were added
to the register, and 140 inspections were made during the year. Two
notices requiring remedy of defects were served and were complied with.
