The City Council renewed all licences for a period of one year,
operating from 1st July, 1936, to 30th June, 1937.
The duties of inspection involve visits both by day and by night and are
carried out by a male sanitary inspector for men's lodging houses and
the female sanitary inspector for the women's lodging house. During
the year, 186 inspections were made, 69 being between the hours of 6 p.m.
and 9 a.m.
With the exception of one they were generally satisfactory. Conditions
in one lodging house were found to be gradually deteriorating, but
following representations to the owner some improvement was effected.
Houses Let in Tenements.—The sanitary inspectors paid 7,402
visits of inspection to houses of this class, which number some 3,350.
Legal proceedings in respect of infringements of statutory provisions
were taken in two cases, as detailed on page 81.
Rag-and-Bone Dealers.—There are 5 premises in the City in which
this business is carried on. No matters requiring attention by the
department have arisen during the year.
Rag Flock—Public Health Act, 1936, Sec. 136.—There is one factory
in the City which comes within the provisions of the Act. Although rag
flock is not manufactured there, it is used in making up material for
mattresses, etc. One sample was taken during the year and was found
to be satisfactory.
Schools.—In addition to the large number of academic institutions
in Westminster there are 29 elementary and 5 secondary schools either
wholly or partly under the control and management of the London County
Council.
