Mr. Stewart Tait, Dental Surgeon, submits the following report:—
Dental Clinic
(held in the premises of the Western Dispensary).
During the past year there has been a steady attendance at the
dental clinic.
The general rule has been that mothers attending have taken
more interest in their teeth and also in those of their children.
The result has been that there is a considerable diminution in the
amount of dental sepsis found; also in the number of carious teeth.
However, in spite of this, there is much room for further improvement.
The chief trouble 1 find with many who attend is the fear of dental
treatment. Cases have arisen where, after attending for examination,
the patient has failed to appear for treatment and has thus taken up
the time of those mothers who are desirous of having their teeth put
in a healthy state.
There have been many young children brought to the Clinic where
the amount of dental sepsis has been high, and in some cases the only
possible treatment has been extraction. The result of this is that the
child is deprived, at a very early and important stage of its life, of the
full means of mastication.
