year of age. Figures under the same grouped causes are given from 1929
onwards, showing the proportion per 1,000 births applicable under each

Prematurity and other enfeebling factors in the new-born remain
the heaviest handicaps on infant life. It must be difficult to diagnose
influenza in an infant under one year, but as it is registered as a
cause of death it must be accepted. Possibly it is an omnibus term
covering a range of febrile affections due to some bacterial origin.
