Restaurants.—The register of restaurants includes 1,426 premises.
During the year 2,149 visits were paid. Kitchens, pantries, messroom
arrangements for stall, systems for washing up, and general sanitary
arrangements were specially observed. Defects requiring notices were
found in 303 instances, and in each case the work was satisfactorily
carried out.
Bakehouses.—At the end of 1936 there were 56 bakehouses in use in
the City, of which 37 were underground. 174 visits of inspection were
made, and in all instances the cleansing which is required to be done
twice a year was carried out. It was only found necessary to serve notice
in one instance.
Fried Fish Shops.—There are 18 fried fish shops in the City to which
the food inspectors paid 29 visits. It was necessary to send two notices
for cleansing.
Unsound Food.
The following table shows the nature and quantity of the various
articles of food voluntarily surrendered or submitted for destruction during
the year:—

By-laws for the Protection of Food.
These by-laws made by the London County Council, and confirmed by
the Minister of Health in December, 1936, became operative on the
1st January, 1937.
