(d) Dental and convalescent treatment as on previous table for
women, and children up to 5 years of age.
(e) Nursing services.
(/) Special treatment, e.g., artificial sunlight.
(g) Special items such as spectacles provided in necessitous cases
through the Barlow Charity.
It might be added that even in cases not associated with the welfare
centres expert obstetric assistance is available for all medical practitioners
requiring it in abnormal confinements and likewise for all private practising
midwives in similar circumstances.
Midwifery Service.
Trained Midwives for all Confinements.—For women living in the
City who apply through the Council's welfare centres there is a complete
midwifery service. Throughout the greater part of the City the midwives
of Westminster Hospital attend necessitous women on behalf of the Council,
and in the remainder the midwives of the City of Westminster Health
Society practise for the same purpose. The local welfare centres are the
pivots of the scheme in both areas. For those who do not attend the
welfare centres the supply of private midwives is adequate. Certain
other voluntary hospitals, e.g., Middlesex, Charing Cross, General Lying-in,
etc., and the Ormond Home, Chelsea, provide free or at small cost district
midwifery services in the City.
In the case of the City Council's own scheme the midwives working in
the district have the entire resources of Westminster Hospital to support
them—maternity beds, consultant and other medical services.
The work performed by the midwives provided by the Westminster
Hospital under the City Council's scheme is summarised below.
