Scarlet Fever.—One hundred and ninety-four cases of this disease
occurred in 1935, a decrease of 181 on the figures of 1934. No death
occurred. The case rate of this disease per 1,000 of the population was
1.56 for the City, and for England and Wales 2.96. The death-rate for
London was 0.01 per 1,000, and for England and Wales 0.01. Of the
total cases in Westminster 97.0 per cent, were removed to hospital.
Diphtheria.—One hundred and eleven cases of this disease occurred,
showing a decrease of 42 on the figures of 1934. The case rate of this
disease for Westminster was 0.8 per 1,000 living, and for England and
Wales 1.60. There were 5 deaths, males aged 4, 4 and 47 years; females
aged 1 and 6 years. The death-rate for England and Wales was 0.08,
for London 0.06, and for Westminster 0.04.
Report on Schick Testing and Immunisation Treatment against
Diphtheria in Westminster, 1935, by Dr. Ian S. Thomson,
Assistant Medical Officer of Health.
This treatment was continued throughout the year at the Council's
Maternity and Child Welfare Centres, and at the Westminster Health
Society's Centre. One clinic is held at each centre each week.
Two hundred and thirty-five cases were dealt with during the year as
compared with 249 and 121 in 1934 and 1933 respectively.

Treatment was continued on the lines indicated in previous reports.
The preliminary Schick Test was only done on older children or for some
special reason in particular cases. Treatment given and the results of
the tests are shown in the following table. Positive reactors were given
preventive treatment.
