Samples Nos. N. 3 and N. 4 were obtained from firms who retail ice
cream in the City, but manufacture it in other districts. The remaining
samples were obtained from persons who manufacture this commodity
at premises within the City.
Many of these samples were obtained rather late in the summer season,
and by the time the results were received from the bacteriologist the
majority of the makers had ceased to manufacture ice cream for the year.
In those cases where the bacteriologist reported that the sample contained
more than 100,000 colonies per c.c. the manufacturers' attention was
drawn to the results of the examinations, and it was intimated that if
the sale of ice cream was to be continued, considerable improvements
would need to be effected in the methods of manufacture, otherwise the
Council would have to consider the question of removing the premises
from the register. In all except one case, the premises concerned were
small shops at which ice cream is sold only during the summer months.
Samples No. N.l and N.6 were obtained from the same manufacturer,
the latter being taken after improvements had been effected.
Preserved meat etc., premises.
One hundred and nineteen premises were on the register for the
manufacture of pressed, pickled, potted or preserved meat, fish or other
foods, five of which were registered during the year. One hundred and
sixty-eight inspections were made. One firm of butchers were fined 10s.
and ordered to pay £1 1s. costs., for failing to register their premises
for the manufacture and sale of sausages.
Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking) Act, 1928.
This Act inaugurated the National Mark Scheme.
Regulations are from time to time made by the Minister of Agriculture
and Fisheries prescribing grades for "Home" produce. If the
quality of the produce is consistent with these grades the National Mark
may be affixed to the package.
The administration of the Regulations by the City Council consists
in seeing that food vendors observe the requirements of labelling and that
the National Mark is not applied to foods that are not of the prescribed
standard.
