Outworkers.— The total number of lists received during the year
amounted to 1,031.
Notices in respect of failure to send lists were sent to 99 firms. No
legal proceedings were necessary.
The lists contained 9,412 names and addresses, of which 5,283 were
in other districts, 4,662 being within the area of the County of London
and 512 in the surrounding districts.
The number of individual outworkers in the City at the close of the
year was 1,668, of whom 1,585 were registered as occupying workshops.
The number of premises in which outwork was being carried on was 697.
Special Classes of Premises and Occupations subject to control
by the Local Authority.
(1) Common Lodging Houses.
There are 5 common lodging houses in the City of Westminster,
4 for men and 1 for women, viz.:—

The City Council renewed all licences for a period of one year,
operating from 1st July, 1934, to 30th June, 1935.
The common lodging house at 40, Gt. Peter Street, licensed for 57
women and 2 children, was closed on the 18th June, 1934.
The duties of inspection involve visits both by day and by night and are
carried out by a male sanitary inspector for men's lodging houses and
the female sanitary inspector for the women's lodging house. During
the year, 187 inspections were made, and generally conditions were found
to be satisfactory. Complaints were received from time to time during
the year as to the quality or soundness of the food supplied to the inmates,
the condition of the washing arrangements and other matters of a minor
character. On investigation, they were found to have little foundation
in fact.
