The Milk Act, 1934.
Milk Marketing Board's Scheme for the Supply of Milk to Schools.
At the request of the London County Council, samples of milk were
taken for chemical analysis from schools and one hospital in the City.
The 1st October, however, saw the coming into operation of the Milk
Marketing Board's Scheme for the supply of milk to schools. Under this
scheme, milk is supplied to schools in one-third pint bottles at a cost of
½d., and it is a condition of the scheme that the Medical Officer of Health
for the district has to be satisfied as to the quality of the milk supplied.
Prior to the coming into force of the scheme the London County Council,
as the Education Authority of London, in consultation with the Metropolitan
Medical Officers of Health, decided that pasteurised milk only should
be supplied to the County Council Schools under the scheme and it was
decided that samples of such milk should be bacteriologically examined
as well as chemically analysed.
The London County Council were accordingly furnished with particulars
of the dealers licensed by the City Council under the Milk (Special
Designations) Order, 1923, for the sale of pasteurised milk in the City, and
on receipt from the London County Council of the names of the dealers
appointed to supply milk to the Westminster schools, steps were at once
taken to test the quality of such milk by taking samples in course of
delivery to the schools. The result of the subsequent analysis or
bacteriological examination is communicated to the head teacher of the
school concerned.
