Clearance Areas.
Reference was made in the report of last year to some small areas
which had been described in the report of the year 1930 as coming under
the description of " Clearance Areas." Two of these areas, Cottage
Place and Horse Shoe Alley, have been cleared of working-class dwellings.
The City Council, by arrangement with the owners, rehoused 10
families from Horse Shoe Alley. The other families either found alternative
accommodation, assisted by the owners in some cases, or were provided
with such accommodation by the owners.
Pulford Street Site.—This site is now in course of development by a
Public Utility Society formed in 1930 and known as the " Westminster
Housing Trust, Ltd." The land extends to some 2½ acres of which about
2 acres is vacant land acquired from the London County Council at the
cost of £32,000: the remainder comprises the street frontage of the
property, on which stand some 36 houses, and it is being conveyed to the
Trust as a free gift for housing purposes by the Duke of Westminster.
The capital cost of the buildings to be erected is estimated at some
£75,000. The Council has undertaken to contribute an amount equal to
15 per cent, of the total cost of the buildings (exclusive of the land),
