Outworkers.—The total number of lists received during the year
amounted to 1,067.
Notices in respect of failure to send lists were sent to 95 firms. No
legal proceedings were necessary in respect of this offence.
The lists contained 9,696 names and addresses, of which 5,723 were
in other districts, 4,906 being within the Metropolitan area and 559 in the
Loudon Suburban Districts.
The number of individual outworkers in the City at the close of the
year was 1,619, of whom 1,511 were registered as occupying workshops.
The number of premises in which outwork was being carried on was 742.
Smoke Abatement.—The following table shows the extent to which
smoke has been a cause of complaint to the sanitary authority during
the past five years, and also a summary of the measures taken in
mitigation:—

Two firms were summoned under the Public Health Acts, 1891 to
1926, for allowing chimneys to send forth smoke in such quantities as to
be a nuisance.
In one case the Magistrate stated he was satisfied there had been
a nuisance, but felt that the case could be met by adjourning the summons
sine die.
In the other case the Magistrate made an order to abate the nuisance
within 14 days and ordered the defendants to pay £3 3s. costs.
Greater London Joint Smoke Abatement Committee.—This Committee
held at least one meeting during the year. Your Medical Officer of
Health is a representative of the Metropolitan Boroughs' Standing Joint
