twice as great as the increase for the country as a whole. This may be
only a transient increase, but suggests the relative prosperity of the
London area. This is confirmed by the comparatively low unemployment
ratio, and should have resultant good effects on the health of the
people.
The following table shows the decrease of the population as it has affected the various wards of the City.

* Increase. |
It may be noted that the wards which show the greatest decrease in
proportion to population are those, such as Regent, Conduit and Charing
Cross, which have long since ceased to be primarily residential quarters
Great Marlborough ward shows a small increase, and Strand a very smal
decrease. As the population of these two wards, like one or two others
has fallen by over 50 per cent, since the beginning of the century, it is
possible that the full effect of decentralisation has already been felt ir
these wards, and that a balance has been established.
The following table throws some light on the age distribution of the population of the City of Westminster, as compared with that of the Administrative County of London as a whole. The succeeding table gives a similar comparison with regard to marital condition.
