Caviare.— Of 10 samples 5 were found to contain boric acid. The
following are the results of proceedings:—
Fine. Costs.

Cream.—94 samples were taken of which 2 were adulterated. One
contained 0.42 grains of boric acid per pound, while the other contained
only 23.35 per cent. of butter fat. Both were unofficial samples.
Preserved Fruit.—68 samples were taken and 1 was found to contain
2 grains of tin per pound. No action was taken.
Sausages.—72 samples were taken, with one exception all were found
to be genuine. This case has already been referred to as contravening
the Preservatives Regulations in regard to labelling. The vendor was
cautioned.
Walnuts.—On information from the Port of Bristol a consignment of
walnuts forwarded to London was examined for preservative. Sulphur
dioxide to the extent of 34 parts per million was found in samples. The
matter was thoroughly investigated by the British Fruit Growers Association
in conjunction with the growers and exporters in France. It is the
practice of some growers to store the walnuts in tanks of water. Small
quantities of sulphur dioxide is sometimes introduced into these tanks
as a preservative.
In any case the amount of sulphur is small when compared with the
permissible amounts in other fruits, and it is doubtful whether any specified
amount of preservative applies to walnuts according to the terms of the
regulations.
Spirits.—Eighty-seven samples were analysed during the year. They
consisted of Rum 2, Gin 18, Brandy 10 and Whiskey 57.
All of these proveed to be genuine.
During the year 49 milk sellers took advantage of the provisions contained
in Section 21 and the Second Schedule of the Food and Drugs
(Adulteration) Act, 1928, to request the Local Authority to take samples
from the consignors at the place of delivery. The form of written
