before registration was granted. At the end of the year 20 premises had
been registered.
Medical practitioners were likewise made aware of the requirements as
to cases of food poisoning. From July to 31st December five notifications
were received and investigated. None of these was of serious
nature.
Merchandise Marks Act, 1926.
The Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking) Act, 1928.
The orders made under these statutes now number 9 and relate to
(1) Fresh apples.
(2) Raw tomatoes.
(3) Eggs in shell (i.e., hen and duck eggs).
(4) Dried eggs.
(5) Currants, sultanas and raisins.
(6) Oat products (i.e., oatmeal, rolled oats, oat floiir and groats).
(7) Honey.
(8) Salmon and trout.
(9) Butter.
Administration mainly consists in seeing that food vendors observe
the requirements by displaying distinctive marks, labels, etc., distinguishing
the origin, Home, Empire, Foreign, as the case may be, of the produce for
sale. For really adequate supervision it would be necessary to employ
special staff. The food inspectors carry out the purposes of these Acts
usually in the course of routine food inspections and made 666 observations
as to marking, etc., in shops and at food stalls. Purchasers made
three complaints, but in no case did there appear deliberate intent to
deceive. Some nine verbal and written warnings were issued.
Artificial Cream Act, 1929.
There are no premises in the City subject to the provisions of this
Act.
Sampling of milk delivered to London County Council Hospitals
and Schools.—In response to a special request from the County and School
Medical Officer samples of milk about to be delivered to the one County
Council hospital in the City (Sheffield Street), and the 18 schools have been
submitted to chemical analysis. In one case the milk proved to be
of poor quality. The work is carried out in the ordinary course of milk
