Review of Expenditure awl Economies.—During the Autumn, Circular
No. 1222 from the Ministry of Health relating to the national financial
situation and local public expenditure was considered. The Minister
pointed out that expenditure should be viewed in relation to what was
urgently necessary for the public health. The Public Health Committee
in common with other committees reviewed its estimates for the year
1931-32 and was able to effect certain economies by re-arrangements
and by curtailing some proposed extensions of its services until a more
propitious occasion.
Congresses Attended.—Frankfurt, Whitsuntide, 19.31. Royal Institute
of Public Health Annual Congress. Delegates were Councillor H. S. E.
Vanderpant and the Medical Officer of Health. Much useful information
was brought back on Housing, Day Nurseries, etc., which was embodied
in reports to the appropriate committees.
Snwke Abatement Conference.—Liverpool, September, 1931. Councillor
Mrs. Alderson Home attended as the City Council's delegate, but
at her own expense. She reported fully to the Committee on the
proceedings.
Glasgow, July, 1931.—Royal Sanitary Institute Annual Congress.
This was attended by the Medical Officer of Health as delegate and duly
reported on by him.
Bridlington Conference.—Sanitary Inspectors' Association, September,
1931. Mr. T. H. Jackson, sanitary inspector selected by the Medical
Officer of Health, attended and prepared a report for the committee.
Winter School for Health Visitors, held in closing days of 1930 and
beginning of 1931. Miss Sanders, a senior health visitor, attended this
course, her reasonable expenses being provided by the City Council.
This is a study course held every year and for some years past the Council
has sent one of the health visitors. Great educational benefit has always
been derived from these refresher courses.
Women Health Officers' Association.—Study tour in Holland. The
City Council granted leave without expenses to Miss Walding, a senior
health visitor, for a similar study tour in Germany in 1930. On this
occasion Miss Walding made a shortened study tour in Holland at her
own expense and in time taken from her annual leave.
