effected by private enterprise but is somewhat hampered because of the
Rent Restriction Acts.
Another area, off Vauxhall Bridge Road, containing 17 cottages,
was included in a special report by the Medical Officer.
Combined Premises.
At 174 premises there are tenements over shops and other business
premises. The number of tenements is estimated at 320, and the total
occupants at over 1,000. The general remarks with regard to this class
of dwelling previously made in reference to other districts also apply
here.
In addition, there are a number of dwellings for caretakers in the
various office and mansion blocks which call for no special comment.
There are 5 common lodging-houses in this district, 2 for women and
1 for men managed by the Church Army, a large one for men by the
Salvation Army, and one for men by a private owner. A total of
1,226 beds is provided in the five.
Overcrowding.
Cases recorded number 93 in this district. Some 70 cases do not fall
below the legal limit, but are deemed to be socially overcrowded inasmuch
as, in most instances, the children are reaching adolescence, and the
time is arriving when additional accommodation will be necessary.
Twenty-three cases were more serious, and could be described as illegal;
some have already been provided for, and the remainder will be dealt
with as soon as possible.
Restaurants.
Cafes and licensed houses number 109.

in Eccleston, St. George's and Warwick Squares and in St. George's
Road and Belgrave Road, but the predominant types are 3 or 4-storied
basement houses let in tenements.
When the district was laid out for building nearly a century ago,
it was planned in an orderly disposition with straight roads, intersected
by others, with the result that the area consists of square or rectangular
blocks of houses, closely built up on all sides in terrace fashion. There is
