inspector to the Urban District Council of Barnes, were appointed to fill
the vacancies caused by these retirements.
I have also to report with regret the death of Mr. A. E. Birch, mortuary
keeper, He had held a joint appointment with his wife, who predeceased
him only twelve months. His service dated from 1890. The assistant
mortuary keeper, Mr. K. Watling, was promoted to fill Mr. Birch's place.
The appointment is no longer a joint one, assistance for cleaning being
obtained from part-time employees. Two deaths occurred among the
disinfecting staff—E. Bridger, pensioned in 1926 owing to ill-health,
died in 1927; E. C. Powell, with 23 years' service, died very suddenly
in September, 1927. Both were capable and trustworthy servants of
the Council. To fill the vacancies thus created A. W. Nicholls was
appointed assistant mortuary keeper, and J. R. Doyle to the disinfecting
staff.
In conclusion, I wish to thank the past and present Chairmen and the
members of the Public Health Committee, also the Chairman and members
of the Maternity and Child Welfare Committee, for their constant support
and encouragement, and to acknowledge with gratitude the assistance
given by the staff of the Department. I wish to put on record my appreciation
of the self-denying efforts of the staff in connection with the
flood. A great deal of the work was entirely voluntary, and although
often involving exceedingly long hours, was cheerfully carried out.
I have the honour to be,
Your obedient Servant,
Andrew J. Shinnie.
July, 1928.
