the strain of resuming manual work after long periods without employment
and have had to discontinue after varying periods. It is felt,
however, that a few suitable cases would derive lasting benefit from
schemes of this nature.

The following classified table shows the number of cases recommended to the London County Council for institutional treatment in 1926:—

The totals for the previous year were:—
Hospitals, 41; and Sanatoria, 75.
The Tuberculosis Dispensary is affiliated by official agreement with
Westminster Hospital. During the year some 15 cases were referred to
the hospital for orthopaedic treatment or for the treatment of some associated
condition such as the removal of tonsils and adenoids. In the case
of school children the treatment of these nose and throat conditions is
undertaken by the school authorities, and Dispensary cases are referred
to them.
X-ray examinations were made at Westminster Hospital in five cases
in connection with the work of the Dispensary.
223 specimens of sputum were examined at the hospital in connection
with the work of the Dispensary.
Artificial pneumothorax treatment has been carried out in a few
suitable cases, all with very satisfactory results. The treatment was
carried out in three cases at Brompton Hospital and in two cases at other
hospitals. There was a total of 35 refills, at a cost to the Council of
10s. 6d. for each refill.
Dental Treatment.—This treatment is undertaken for school children
by the Education Authority and for pensioners by the Ministry of Pensions,
and cases are referred from the Dispensary to these Authorities.
Other cases are treated at the expense of the Council at the Dental Clinic
at the Western Dispensary in Rochester Row. Three new cases have
received treatment during the year, making 18 attendances. Thirty-eight
extractions, 15 fillings, and other operations were performed. Anaesthetics
were given in six instances.
