V
It has been the aim of the Council to see that houses are kept in a state
of tenantable repair, and to endeavour to deal fairly between landlords
and tenants so that essential matters are attended to. Attempts are
frequently made to make use of the municipal authority in private
disputes, and the sanitary inspectors have had to exercise a considerable
amount of tact and discrimination in dealing with such cases. In no
instance has any legitimate complaint been made which has not been
attended to and the cause thereof remedied to the fullest extent possible.
The Report gives particulars of the work carried out in connection
with the Maternity and Child Welfare and the Tuberculosis schemes of
the Council. In both departments a large amount of valuable work
has been carried out, and the increasing demand made upon them is
evidence of the appreciation with which they are regarded by those in
whose interests they serve.
The Report also gives information as to the supervision of food in the
City and of the places where it is sold, a matter of considerable importance
in a City like Westminster with a resident and working population of
close on 400,000 besides many thousands of daily visitors on business or
pleasure.
I have the honour to be,
Your obedient Servant,
FRANCIS J. ALLAN,
Medical Officer of Health.
