flats and 5 five-room flats, a total of 40 flats, containing 150 rooms,
capable of housing approximately 300 persons.
All the flats are absolutely self-contained, i.e., each has a separate
scullery, bath and W.C. Each flat is entered from a lobby so as to give
absolute privacy to the respective tenants, and from this lobby access is
obtained to the scullery and bathroom and also to the open balconette
and W.C. Each lobby is provided with shelves and hat and coat hooks.
The windows are fitted with Venetian blinds, and each living room
is supplied with a "Worker" range with a small oven, and when the oven
is not required an ordinary open fire may be used. A cupboard is provided
between each scullery and living room with access from both sides. The
scullery has a suitable gas stove, sink, and a properly ventilated larder.
The bathroom has a good-sized green enamel bath, and hot water is to
be supplied from a copper which may also be used for boiling clothes.
A coal bunk is provided on the open balconette adjoining the scullery.
Every bedroom is fitted with a mantel, register stove and supplied with
a good-sized cupboard with hooks for hanging clothes.
Every flat is lighted by gas on the slot system.
The entrance doorways are finished with glazed facing bricks to
avoid damage, and the staircase walls are lined throughout with tiles to
ensure an absolutely smooth and clean surface requiring no annual
expense for distempering. The floors and roofs throughout are of fireproof
construction, and the pavings and landings, sculleries and
bathrooms are finished with granolithic. The sculleries and W.C.s and
the bathrooms are all tiled to a height of five feet with white glazed
tiles finished with a band of red tiles.
A drying room to enable tenants to dry their clothes has been
provided.
There are 20 perambulator sheds for each of which a small weekly
rental is charged.
The rents to be charged are: for a 5-room flat, 17s. 6d. per week, for
a 4-room flat, 14s. per week, and for a 3-room flat, 10s. 6d. per week; rates
are additional in each case.
There have been a large number of applications for the flats from all
parts of London and also from outside. The Housing Committee, in
making a selection, have given special consideration to families living at
present under unsatisfactory conditions, and to meet the expressed wish
of the donor of the site only those persons with children living with them
have been accepted as tenants.
The approximate cost of these dwellings is estimated to be £26,000.
New Peabody Buildings.—The Trustees ha've been unable to proceed
with the remaining block of their dwellings in Horseferry Road, being
held up by the Rent Restriction Act,
