In this Table all primary notifications are included, and also other
new cases of tuberculosis coming to the knowledge of the Medical Officer
of Health during the year.
In addition to the deaths mentioned in the above table, six males
died who had been notified in the past as suffering from tuberculosis :
the cause of death was certified to be cancer of lung (age 54), aneurism
(age 58), syphilis of lung (age 52), bronchiectasis (age 17) (in none of the
above was tubercle found post-mortem), broncho-pneumonia (age 44),
and acute pneumonia (age 53).
One female notified in 1904, in whom the disease had been arrested
for many years, died from angina pectoris.
Of the males, 28 of the deaths in the above table, and of the females
16, were new cases in 1923.
The remaining deaths, 40 males and 19 females, had been notified
in previous years :—
1908, 1909 and 1911, 1 each; 1915 and 1917, 2 each, all males;
1918, 4 males, 1 female ; 1919, 8 males, 1 female ; 1920, 3 males,
2 females ; 1921, 6 males, 2 females ; 1922, 12 males, 9 females.
Two persons (1 male age 31 and 1 female age 20), notified in 1923,
died after leaving Westminster.
Nationality of Patients.—As usual, many nationalities were represented
among those notified in 1923 ; 280 were born in England, 15 in
Ireland, 2 in Scotland, 2 in Wales and 3 in British Dominions ; 22 were
of foreign origin:—Italian 4, French 3, Russian 3, Polish 3, Swiss 2,
Portuguese, Austrian, German, Spanish, Belgian, Roumanian and
Chinese, 1 each,
