1,344 intimations of nuisances (exclusive of smoke nuisances), &c.,
and 61 statutory notices were issued; 1,445 letters were written.
Police Court proceedings had to be. resorted to in respect of 6 properties.
In one case in which a magistrate's order had not been obeyed a
penalty of £5 was inflicted. One order to abate nuisance was made, and
in three cases the summonses were withdrawn on payment of costs, the
work having been completed before the hearing. In one case proceedings
were taken under the bye-laws for failing to keep a w.c. in a proper
state of repair and a penalty of £3 was inflicted.
Plans.—468 sets of plans were examined during 1922. Of these,
39 were plans of new buildings. The corresponding figures for 1921
were 383 and 22.
Failure to give notice occurred in 36 instances, and to send in plans
47 instances, and a number of builders were cautioned. One builder
was summoned for improper construction of soil and waste pipes and
fined 20s. and 21s. costs.
Water Supply.—36 notices of withdrawal of water supply were received
from the Metropolitan Water Board. It was reinstated on notice.
The reasons given for cutting off the supply were: Waste of water, 1;
non-payment of rates, 35.
Additional water supply to tenement houses was provided in 53
instances.
Removal of Offensive Refuse.—Several contractors were cautioned.
Owing to the deficiency of rainfall in 1921 (11.6 inches below the
average) it was apprehended that there might be some shortage of water
in 1922. Fortunately no difficulty was experienced, but notwithstanding
that 30.5 inches of rain fell in 1922 (2.35 inches above the average) it is
