Ophthalmia Neonatorum.—24 cases were notified and 2 others (twins)
born in a home in Streatham were notified in that district. There were
also two cases of which information was received, who apparently developed
the complaint at a later date than the period during which this illness is
notifiable, making a total of 28 cases in all. Of these, 8 cases were
admitted to St. Margaret's Hospital, 1 to St. George's Hospital and 1 to
the Infirmary; with the exception of one over age case who died in St. Margarets,
all recovered without any permanent injury to the eyes resulting.
Seven of the babies were born in Hospitals or Maternity Homes.
One of these was said to be quite well on discharge from hospital, but was
found shortly after to be suffering. Another case found by the Health
Visitors had been attended by a midwife who failed to call in a doctor
or to notify. She was dealt with by the County Council for the former,
and was summoned by the City Council for the latter, and was fined £1 and
£2 2s. costs.
