Midwives also attended at the Rochester Row Centre on 52 afternoons
to interview expectant mothers.
Puerperal Fever and Mortality in Childbirth.—Six cases of puerperal
fever occurred with four deaths. In two the confinement took place in
lying-in homes. Of the remaining four 1 was result of extra uterine
fcetation and in two the fever was due to influenza.
Three other deaths occurred, one due to criminal abortion and two to
other causes.

Infancy and Early Childhood.—The number of visits paid by the Health Visitors in the four areas into which the City was divided, is shown in the accompanying table:—

To the Pimlico and Bessborougli Street figures have to be added visits paid by the midwife,
viz., first pre natal 108, subsequent 502; children under 1, 172.
The visits paid by the midwives of the Health Society are included under their respective
headings.
