E. FOOD SUPPLY.
During 1920 visits have been paid to the various classes of business,
and intimations were served in respect of 584 premises, followed by 3
statutory notices.
Restaurants.—The kitchens of hotels and restaurants are inspected
at least once a quarter.
Ice-cream Premises.—There were during the year 155 places where
this commodity was made or sold, and these were kept under supervision;
232 visits were paid.
Bakehouses.—At the end of 1919 there were 17 above-ground and
67 underground in use. During 1920 the number in use were 21 above
and 63 below ground. All the bakehouses were inspected, and cleansing
carried out twee a year. In two cases, severe cautions were given that
prosecutions would be instituted if greater attention was not given to
cleanliness.
Milkshops.—At the end of 1920, 479 names of persons selling milk
were upon the register. These include persons selling milk on rounds,
who had no shop or store.
703 visits were paid during the year, besides those paid by the two
inspectors talcing samples under the Food and Drugs Acts, to premises
in which milk is sold.
Cowhouse.—There is only one remaining. At the Annual Licensing
Sessions in December, the number of cows which might be kept was
reduced from 19 to 6.
There are no slaughter-houses in Westminster.
During the war and up to the middle of 1920, by an Order of the
Ministry of Food, no new retail food business could be opened without
permission. This has been of considerable benefit, as all such applications
were referred to the Public Health Department for a report as to
the suitability of the premises. In a number of instances the premises
were found to be quite unsuitable, and in others permission was granted
subject to alterations being effected.
In 1920, 4 applications were considered, 3 were passed, 2 of them only
after considerable improvements were carried out, and one was refused
as unsuitable.
