By arrangement with the County Council school children from
Battersea, Chelsea, Holborn, Kensington, Lambeth and St. Marylebone
were sent to the Station for cleansing, these numbered 503 for head lice,
34 for body lice, and 86 for scabies.
Each case implies a number of attendances for treatment, and the
disinfection of the clothing, besides which in the Westminster cases the
bedding, &c., is removed for disinfection at the same time that the persons
affected are being treated. Lately, an improved method has been adopted
in dealing with head lice cases whereby, as a rule, the head can be cleansed
at one attendance, and without cutting the hair.
In dealing with the Westminster cases, 346 visits were paid to the
houses.
Difficulty is frequently encountered in dealing with adults, as there is
no compulsory power under which they can be compelled to be cleansed,
except in the case of inmates of common lodging houses. Neither is there
compulsory power to cleanse children who are not of school age, but it is
usually easy to persuade parents to allow them to attend at the Station
along with the other children.
Mortuaries.
The number of bodies removed to the Council's mortuaries under
order of the Coroner, or to await burial, was 296; in 2 instances death
was the result of infectious disease, anthrax and measles.
Inquests were held at Horseferry Road, where the Coroner's Court is
situated, in 269 cases, and there were 8 adjourned inquests. Post-mortem
examinations were made in 148 instances at Horseferry Road.
The number of dead bodies taken to the mortuaries for purposes of
inquest and to await burial during the last 18 years are:—

There are resting placcs for the dead at Drury Lane, Ebury Bridge,
or Dufours Place, but the public make very little use of them.
