The number of deaths of unnotified cases is shown below:—
1913. | 1914. | 1915. | 1916. | 1917. | 1918. | 1919. | 1920. | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Pulmonary | 32 | 46 | 40 | 31 | 35 | 41 | 27 | 33 |
Non-pulmonary | 25 | 13 | 24 | 21 | 10 | 14 | 8 | 7 |
These cases may have been notified elsewhere, or have been unsuspected
cases in which medical assistance has not been sought, or cases
not diagnosed until after death; this particularly applies to the nonpulmonary
cases, in which the cause of the illness may be obscure.
Enquiry was made with respect to such cases. Some of these cases are of
persons who, although feeling ill, have continued at work and have not
sought medical assistance. A sudden haemorrhage occurs and death
results. There are, however, other cases in which the medical attendant
does not notify under the belief that it has already been done by someone
else, perhaps in another district. I agree with the suggestion that has
been made that every doctor who is consulted by a tuberculous patient
should be required to notify, independently of whether he has reasons to
believe that the case has already been notified by another doctor, as at
present is the regulation. Surgeons, in particular, not infrequently fail
to notify cases, apparently from ignorance that non-pulmonary tuberculosis
is notifiable.
In the second Table details are given of ex-soldiers or sailors, asylum
cases and of persons ill before coming to Westminster.
The nationality of the persons notified is as usual varied, representative of the cosmopolitan nature of the population of Westminster. Those not of English birth were:—
