Inspection of Food.
The food exposed for sale in shops and on stalls in the street markets
has been regularly inspected every day (including Sundays). The
following list shows the quantity of food condemned and destroyed
during the year. The bulk of it was submitted by the owners or
purchasers for the opinion of your officers:—

Fresh Fish (various kinds), 5 cwts. 56 lbs.
The gooseberries were affected with American blight or mildew, and
proceedings in respect thereof were taken by the Board of Agriculture.
A quantity of apples were examined in Covent Garden in order to
discover if they showed evidence of any injurious chemicals which
might have been used in the form of a spray during growth. A consignment
was found which had a trace of sulphate of copper round the
stalks insufficient to render the apples liable to be seized. Some others
had apparently been treated with a sulphur compound. It is obviously
desirable that such apples should be peeled or washed before they are
eaten.

The following articles were seized and condemned; appended is a note of the action taken:—
