2,554 intimations of nuisances, &c., and 69 statutory notices
(including 3 for smoke nuisances) were issued; 2,157 letters were
written, and 2,477 interviews took place at the Office.

Police court proceedings for failure to comply with statutory notices were taken with the following results:—

Premises.Offence.Result.
31, Willow Street (dwelling).Damp walls of washhouseRemedied after service of summons; 24s. costs.
19, Lillington Street (tenement house).Dirty condition of basement roomOrder to abate within 14 days.
53, Ponsonby Place (tenement).Defective R.w. pipe, scullery drains, &c.; water supply in basement only.Order to abate within 14 days; 11s. costs.
1, Meard Street (tenement house) and outworkers.Dirty and defective flooring, ceilings, walls, &c.Order to abate within 14 days ; 6s. costs.
51, Conduit Street (workshop).Workshop and w.c. without sufficient ventilation.Adjourned to allow work to be put in hand, at second hearing the work was reported to be nearing completion; 45s. costs.
224, Vauxhall Bridge Road (shop and living rooms).Damp walls of basement and ground floor.Summons dismissed.

In the last case, the owner alleged that the cause of the dampness
was leakage from an adjacent public urinal. Evidence was given by
one of the Council's Divisional Surveyors that this was not and could
not be the cause; but the Magistrate said he was not satisfied, and
dismissed the summons, refusing, however, costs to the defendant, who
was the agent for the premises. Subsequently, when the owner became
acquainted with the facts, steps were taken to protect the walls
from damp.
