St. John's Ward differs from the Hamlet and from the wards in
St. George's Division, in that it contains a number of common
lodging houses which materially affect the death rate. On an average
one third of the deaths occurring in connection with common lodginghouses
is from consumption. There were nine such houses in St.
John's Ward accommodating 1,143 persons, and yielding in the three
years 44 deaths from phthisis; deducting these deaths from the
total, and also making a corresponding reduction in the population,
would bring the average rate for the three years down from 363 to 261,
