of Health for the City of Westminster, as I was not able
to comply with the condition requiring that Officer to devote
his whole time to the duties of the office.
In my Annual Report for 1896 I gave a Table
showing the Census Populations of the Parish, and of the
two Sub-Districts, from 1891 to 1896, and stated my
reasons for believing that the populations, as enumerated
at the Censuses of 1891 and 1896, were too low ; estimating,
however, from them, I calculate that the population of the
Parish at the middle of 1900 was as follows :—
Mayfair 23,906
Belgravia 57,458
* Whole Parish 81,364
The total number of deaths registered in the Parish
during the 52 weeks ending December 29th, 1900, was 1,654
(Table I.). Of these deaths 657 were those of NonParishioners
(Table II.), leaving 997 deaths of Parishioners.
To these, however, must be added 143 deaths of our
Parishioners in Public Institutions in the Metropolis outside
of the Parish, and in the extra Metropolitan Asylums,
so that the corrected total of deaths of our Parishioners
during the 52 weeks was 1,140, or 32 less than the
average during the preceding ten years.
This gives a corrected death-rate of 14'06 per thousand
per annum on the estimated population.
It will be seen from Table I. that the death-rate of the
Parish during 1900 was lower than in 1899, but rather
higher than in 1896, 1897 and 1898, and that it was one per
thousand lower than the average of the ten years,
1890-99.
* For the estimated populations of the various Wards see Addendum at the end ot
this Report.
