And a quantity of sundry articles.
The total number of complaints attended to and of
notices served was rather less than in 1883, having been
619, as compared with 678 in that year.
The only case in which it was necessary to take legal
proceedings was that of 4 houses in Ranelagh Grove, where
the owner failed to carry out the necessary sanitary improvements.
He was condemned to pay 23s. costs and to carry
out the works required within 14 days, which was done to
my satisfaction.
The markets have been regularly inspected and kept in
good order, so that it has only been nesessary to condemn
food exposed for sale in 4 cases.
The slaughter-houses and cow-sheds have been also
regularly inspected and kept in good condition. No application
for a license has been opposed, but licenses were not applied
for in the cases of 2 slaughter-houses, viz.:—those at 48,
South Audley Street (Messrs. Scarlett & Co.), and 42, North
Audley Street (.Mr. Charles May).
The number of articles, clothing, bedding, &c., disinfected
has been much higher than in 1883 on account of the
epidemic of Small Pox, and the new disinfecting apparatus
has been found to work quite satisfactorily.
The President of the Local Government Board having
directed that the 35th section of the Sanitary Act, 1866, and
the 47th section of the Sanitary Laws Amendment Act,
1874, should be put in force throughout the Metropolis, and
