Ballast Pits.
With a view of obviating the inconvenience which is
sometimes occasioned by placing heaps of gravel and sand,
&c., on the side of the footways, severtil ballast pits, fitted
with iron covers, have been built in the footway at various
places throughout the Parish. These pits are depots in
which is kept the gravel and sand used for spreading on the
roads in frosty weather.
Pits have been fixed in the following positions during the
past year:—
6 in Park Lane—viz., 1 by Hamilton Place; 1 by Stanhope
Gate; 1 by South Street; 1 by Mount Street;
1 by Grosvenor Street; and 1 by Green Street.
1 in Hanover Square, by Brook Street.
1 in Grosvenor Gardens, by Ebury Street.
1 in Lower Grosvenor Place, by Ebury Street.
2 in Grosvenor Place—viz., 1 by Halkin Street; 1 by
Chester Street.
2 in Buckingham Palace Road—viz., 1 by Charlotte
Street; 1 by Lower Grosvenor Place.
1 in Wilton Place, by Knightsbridge.
Sewers.
" Davy Lamps " are now used by all men employed in
Sewers work throughout the Parish, instead of the ordinary
open lamps.
Repairs to Sewers.
The following Statement shows the situation, description,
and total cost of the various Sewer works which have been
done by the Parish workmen from Lady-day 1881 to Ladyday
1882:—
