In-Wards have been removed under contract by Mr. Hobbs;
the sweepings in the Out-Wards have been carted from the
streets by the Parish carts to the Parish Wharf, and thence
barged away under contract by Mr. Cole.
With the view of preventing disagreeable smells the
principal thoroughfares have, as occasion required, been
thoroughly washed, and the effect has proved most
beneficial.
Dusting.
The removal of dust has been carried out under contract
in the In-Wards by Mr. Hobbs ; in the Out-Wards by Mr.
Covington.
Watering the Streets.
The spreading of the water in the Streets of the InWards
has been done by Mr. Hobbs; in the Out-Wards
by the horses and carts belonging to the Vestry.
The water for the In-Wards has been supplied by the
Grand Junction Water Company, and that in the OutWards
by the Chelsea Water Company.
Purchase of Wharves, &c.
The Vestry having decided to undertake and carry out
the cleansing and watering of the streets throughout the
Parish by the use of their own plant, &c., in preference to
continuing the contract system hitherto adopted, and having
for this purpose acquired the necessary premises adjoining
the Parish Wharf at Ebury Bridge, it became requisite, in
order to adapt the new wharves to the requirements of the
Parish, to make certain alterations and additions to the
buildings and to the premises generally, so that everything
might be in readiness to begin work on 26th March, 1882.
These alterations, together with the purchase of horses,
wagons, water vans, and other plant and machinery,
involved a considerable outlay.
The following is a statement
of the estimated cost approved by the Vestry, and also a
statement showing the actual expenditure:—
