Flame Burners, the illuminating power varying according
to the importance of the positions in which they are placed.
Supply of Gas.
The streets under the control of the Vestry have been
lighted by gas supplied by the Gas Light and Coke Company
and the London Gas Company.
The lighting of the public lamps in the portions of the
Parish supplied with gas by the Gas Light and Coke Company
has (since the 25th June, 1877) been lighted upon
the average meter system; the Vestry carrying out the
work of lighting, cleansing, and repairs by its own staff of
lamplighters and other workmen, and the gas being paid for
by meter indication, with the exception of those in Piccadilly
already mentioned. The Cannel burners in the In-Wards,
which consumed 2^ ft. per hour previous to April 1880,
have been replaced with burners consuming 3 ft. per hour,
consequently there has been more gas consumed, and the
cost has been a little greater.
The portion of the Parish known as the Grosvenor Place
District has been supplied with Gas by the London Gas
Company at a contract price of £3 5s. per lamp per annum,
including lighting, cleansing, and repairs. The following
statement shows the cost of lighting the Parish, both by the
meter system and by contract:—
