to be adulterated. These second samples, however, I found
to be genuine.
The samples of milk classed as of doubtful quality
contained too little cream, and had probably been skimmed.
The samples of adulterated gin were watered to a somewhat
greater extent than is allowed by the Act (viz.,
35 degrees under proof), except in one case, which was part
of a sample seized by tho Excise officers, and which was
so largely watered that it only contained 15 per cent. of
alcohol. In this instance, the vendor was convicted of
selling spirits without a licence.
The adulterated butters contained other fats (chiefly
butterine) ; the adulterated coffees contained chicory; the
adulterated mustards contained wheat flour and turmeric;
and the adulterated peppers contained rice starch and sand
from dusty berries.
Some of the samples of tea contained small quantities
of " Lie" tea.
Most of the samples were only slightly adulterated.
