February 1st, 1879, that, "according to a recent report in
the Times, the New York Bureau of Vital Statistics reports
that in 1878 there were in that city (population about onethird
that of London) only 2 deaths from Small-pox, the
smallest number reported for any year since 1824, a result
which is attributed to the activity of the vaccinating corps
for some years past." ["Times," January 22nd, 1879 ]
