the highest death.rate among the 23 towns, and a rate
which has increased from 25.8 in 1876 to no less than 35.1
in 1879, which is 5.5 per thousand higher than it was in
1878. Liverpool, with a rate of 271, and Manchester,
with one of 26.9, come next, as usual, but both show an
improvement on their rates for 1878, which were 29.4 and
27.9 respectively.
Among Foreign cities the lowest are, as last year,
Philadelphia with 17.2, and Christiania with 17.5 per
thousand per annum, and these are the only two of the
thirty most important Foreign cities, of which the death.
rates are known, that have lower rates than our Parish; the
nearest after it being Cincinnati, 18.8, Baltimore, 20.3, and
Brooklyn, 20.4. The highest rates recorded during the
year are those of St. Petersburg, 40, and Alexandria, 39.1;
that of Madras, which was 48 in 1878, having decreased to
34.4 in 1879.
