REPORT
ON
THE SANITARY CONDITION
OF
The Parish of St. George, Hanober Square,
FOR THE YEAR 1879,
BY
W. H. CORFIELD, M.A., M.D. (Oxon.), F.R.C.P. (Lond.),
Professor of Hygiene and Public Health in University
College, London,
medical officer of health
(being his eighth annual report).
Co the Vestry of the Parish of St. George,
HANOVER SQUARE.
My Lords and Gentlemen,
In the year 1879, ending on January 3rd, 1880,
53 weeks are included, and this must be remembered in
comparing the figures representing the totals with those of
previous years, although the rates are, as was the case in
1874 (also a year of 53 weeks), corrected to represent
52 weeks, and therefore are comparable directly with those
of other years.
The year has been a healthy one, the death-rate being
well below the average, although, for a reason which will
appear later on, it is a little higher than during 1877 and
1878, being almost exactly the same as in 1876.
The gross total of deaths during the 53 weeks was 2,058,
a larger number than in any one of the previous ten years;
