1,706, giving a corrected death-rate of 18.17 per thousand
per annum, almost exactly the same rate as in the years
1876 and 1873. This is a lower rate than that recorded
for any year, except 1877, when it was quite exceptionally
low, and 1873, when it was 1816, or practically
the same as in 1878, and it is considerably lower than the
average of the last ten years, which was 18.92.
That the causes which made the death-rate of 1877 so
low, were general, is shown by the fact, that not only the
death-rate of London was exceptionally low, viz., 21.9 in
that year, but also that the average death-rate of the 23
large towns of the United Kingdom mentioned by the
Registrar-General was unusually low, viz., 23, and that these
low rates have not been preserved in 1878, as shown by the
following table:—

Table Ia.

Indeed, the causes which have operated to make the
death-rate of the Parish somewhat higher than in 1877
have affected London and most of the other large towns
still more, for, whereas the Parish death-rate has gone up
0.7, that of London has gone up 1.6, and that of the 23
large towns 1.4.
