of Health. The Vestry on inquiry found that the returns
were in the first instance made to the Registrar-General,
who having compiled information therefrom, had, since the
appointment of Medical Officers of Health in 1856, forwarded
the returns to these officers; and, looking to the fact that no
extra trouble was thrown upon the District Registrars, they
declined to comply with the suggestion. The RegistrarGeneral
thereupon wrote to the Medical Officer of Health,
declining to continue to forward the returns. The Vestry
then memorialized the Local Government Board, praying
the Board to give instructions for these returns to be supplied
as heretofore. The Board replied that they had no jurisdiction
to require the Registrar-General to furnish the
returns. Subsequently, the Vestry joined with the Vestry
of St. Mary, Islington, and other Yestries and District
Boards, in a deputation to the President of the Local
Government Board on the subject. The President promised
to consider the matter, and a reply has since been received,
stating that it does not appear that the Board can take any
further steps in the matter.
Contributions by Metropolitan Board to City
Improvements.
The Vestry, learning that the Metropolitan Board of
"Works contemplated contributing the sum of £370,000
towards the formation of a new street from King William
Street to Fenchurch Street, City, in connection with the
completion of the inner circle line of railway, by a junction
between the lines of the Metropolitan Railway and Metropolitan
District Railway Companies, passed a resolution
objecting thereto. A copy of this resolution was forwarded
to the Board. A Bill, however, was passed through Parliament,
and received the Royal assent, sanctioning the
contribution by the Board.
