As the companies use a burner for the common gas calculated
to give a better light than that generally used by the
public, it is very desirable that the illuminating power of the
gas, at or near the works, should exceed the standard (the
light of 12 sperm candles) required by the Act.
The following are the results of experiments which I
have made between three different burners, Sugg's being the
one which is used by the Gas Companies.
No. 1 (Birmingham) burner, No. 2 (Sugg's) burner,
and No. 3 (the old iron) burner.
