* In the model form the heading of column 19 is left blank for the insertion of any other disease which it may be thought desirable to record. I have inserted "Cancer." Two extra
columns might well be devoted to the tabulation of "Malignant Growths," and of "Tuberculous Diseases"; but, for this, a greater precision is needed than at present obtains in the Certificates
as to the Causes of Death.
‡ The term "Scarlatina" often suggests that the cases are not infectious. As this is a dangerous mistake, Scarlet Fever is the only term used.
§ Enteric Fever is also called "Typhoid." The term Typhoid arose from the supposition that this fever was akin to Typhus. It is now known to be a distinct fever, generally
marked by an affection of the lining membrane of the intestine, which is as characteristic as is the affection of the skin in Small-Pox. It is described here as Enteric Fever.
† More precisely, these figures are of "persons removed from St. James's." Some of these were more or less casually in the Parish, and are not fairly described as "belonging thereto."
** Including 1 death in Union House of a wandering person of unknown address.
