Against the above deaths, as affecting the true mortality of
St. James's, should be set the deaths of strangers who die in
hotels and lodging-houses—many of whom have come to
London for medical advice and treatment. A very large
number of such hotels and lodging-houses exist in St.
James's, but the precise number of the deaths among such
visitors is not known. Such deaths, occurring in the district
as are known not to belong to St. James's, are brought into
account below.
The net mortality of the Parish of St. James's
(including the foregoing deaths in outlying institutions)
for the year 1892, was 446. In a population of 24,993.
