Ladies and Gentlemen,
The Sixth Annual Report, which I now have the houour to submit to you,
treats of the sanitary condition and environment, for the year 1897, of one of the most
densely populated districts in London, and, indeed, for that matter, in the United
Kingdom.*
The following summary of facts will be found useful in approaching the various
matters contained in this report.
* According to the 1896 census Whitechapel heads the list with 220 per acre, and St. George the Martyr
stands next with 212,
