Parish of St. George the Martyr, Soutthwark.
In conclusion, I may add, that during the three years 1893-4 and 5 the Vestry of
St. George's have caused 188 official notices to be served, under the Health Acts, on
owners and occupiers of property within the area under inquiry. This action, however,
has only touched the fringe of a long-standing and insanitary evil, and has merely ended
in the removal of a few of the grosser and more glaring defects. On the other hand,
those faults of a structural nature, which are both many in number and of a serious
nature can, in my opinion, be alone mended by radical measures in the shape of a rehousing
scheme, followed by demolition of the buildings covering the area.
