Ladies and Gentlemen,
The Fifth Annual Report, which I now have the honour to submit to you,
treats of the sanitary condition and environment, for the year 1896, of the most
densely populated district in London, and, indeed, for that matter, in the United
Kingdom.
The following summary of facts will be found useful in approaching the various
matters contained in this report.
Area.—St. George's, Southwark, covers 284⅓ acres. The roads and streets, as
returned to the end of 1896, measure 19 miles, 5 furlongs, 14 poles.
